Spread the Word: Advocating for Inclusion and Respect
For over a decade, The Arc Fayette has proudly participated in the Spread the Word campaign, advocating for respect, inclusion, and the elimination of harmful language that marginalizes individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). What began as “Spread the Word to End the Word” has since evolved into a global movement focused on creating a more inclusive society: one that values the contributions, voices, and dignity of all individuals.
Celebrating Inclusion at The Arc Fayette

The Arc Fayette’s commitment to this campaign dates back to 2014, when the first rally was held at the Fayette County Courthouse to raise awareness about the harmful effects of the R-word. In 2017, participants and staff took this advocacy to the State Capitol, speaking out about the power of language and the importance of respectful communication.
By 2019, the campaign shifted to a broader message: not just eliminating a word, but fostering true inclusion in schools, workplaces, and communities. The Arc Fayette remains dedicated to this mission, ensuring that individuals with IDD have equal opportunities to learn, work, and thrive.
This year, in recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, The Arc Fayette celebrated inclusion in a variety of ways:
- Staff and participants wore orange to show their commitment to inclusion.
- T-shirts proudly shared messages of identity and equality, reminding the world that individuals with disabilities are capable of achieving and succeeding.
